The JAKIM Halal certification process, explained

A plain-language walkthrough of how Halal certification works in Malaysia — from preparing your documents and applying through MYeHALAL to the audit and the certification decision.

Updated 10 June 2026

Getting Halal-certified in Malaysia is less about a single form and more about assembling evidence that your product and processes meet the standard. This guide walks through the journey at a high level so you know what to expect.

1. Understand your scheme and obligations

Halal certification is organised into schemes (for example, food and beverage products, or food premises). Your BusinessTier — broadly, the size of your business by revenue — also shapes your obligations, including which internal control system applies (see our guide on IHCS vs HAS). Knowing your scheme and tier tells you exactly which requirements you must satisfy.

2. Prepare your documents and data

This is where most of the effort sits. Typically you will need:

  • company registration and licensing documents,
  • a raw-material masterlist with the Halal status of each ingredient,
  • supplier Halal certificates for materials that require them,
  • evidence of your hygiene and processing controls, and
  • details of your internal Halal control system or committee.

Accuracy and completeness matter — gaps and expired certificates are common reasons an application stalls.

3. Apply through MYeHALAL

Applications are submitted through MYeHALAL, the official portal operated by JAKIM. You register your company, choose the scheme, complete the Senarai Semak application checklist, and upload your supporting documents.

4. Review and audit

The authority reviews your submission and conducts an audit to verify, on site, that what you documented matches reality — your materials, controls, cleanliness, and records. Non-conformances identified during the audit must be corrected within the given timeframe.

5. The certification decision

If the requirements are met, certification is granted. From here the work shifts to maintenance: keeping certificates current, monitoring suppliers, running internal audits, and staying ready for renewal and surveillance.

How HalalSuite helps

HalalSuite guides you through the readiness work step by step: it determines the checklist that applies to you, organises documents and suppliers, flags gaps with a readiness score, and produces a clean, MYeHALAL-ready application pack. After certification, HalalMaintain keeps you audit-ready through every renewal.

This is a general overview, not certification advice. Always follow JAKIM’s current published procedures (MPPHM) and the official MYeHALAL guidance for authoritative requirements.

Frequently asked

How do I apply for Halal certification in Malaysia?

Applications are made through the official MYeHALAL portal operated by JAKIM. You register your company, select the relevant scheme, complete the application checklist (Senarai Semak), upload supporting documents, and submit for review and audit.

What is the Senarai Semak?

The Senarai Semak is the application checklist — a structured list of items and documents you must provide for your Halal application. Working through it completely and accurately is the core of being application-ready.

Does HalalSuite submit my application to JAKIM?

No. HalalSuite prepares a submission-ready pack and organises your evidence, but you apply through the official MYeHALAL portal. HalalSuite surrounds and supports the official process — it never replaces it.
